How the Strategy will make a difference
The 2008-2011 Information Strategy will deliver tangible and specific results that will make a positive difference to the various stakeholders in cancer care in Ontario. Below are highlights of the Strategy’s impact on key stakeholders.
Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care
- Better information on the status of provincial colorectal cancer screening
- Access to technology and information assets needed to leverage and support other cancer screening and chronic disease management programs
- More detailed information on access to care/wait times, diagnosis, and treatment to support cancer planning and policy development
Regional Cancer Programs
- Greater ability to use the new data for decision-making and planning as a result of training and access to online support and resources
- Access to Cancer Care Ontario’s data when needed through enhanced self-serve tools
- Access to Cancer Care Ontario’s expertise in areas such as informatics, project management, IT and eHealth to support local needs
- Stronger confidence in Cancer Care Ontario’s strategy to support interoperability and systems integration
Health Care Providers
- Enhanced ability to focus on encouraging patients to get screening because they will know who needs to be screened
- Improved awareness of patient symptoms because patients will be able to manage their cancer symptoms using electronic assessments tools, and keep the entire care team informed
- Increased confidence that their patients are receiving the safest chemotherapy treatments because of the use of Computerized Physician Order Entry
Patients
- Greater assurance knowing they are receiving chemotherapy supported by automated checks (i.e., Computerized Physician Order Entry systems)
- Ability to use provincial wait times information to make informed treatment decisions and to hold the government accountable for wait times
- Regular screening for colorectal cancer because of automatic invitations and reminders
- Ability to track their own cancer symptoms online and share their results with their health care team
