Launched in fall 2008, this community learning series provides health service providers in Aboriginal communities with culturally relevant health education tools to promote awareness of colorectal cancer.

Although colorectal cancer is on the rise in the Aboriginal population, it is 90% curable when caught early through regular screening.

The Let’s take a stand against… colorectal cancer! toolkit was created after a needs assessment in 2006 and 2007 showed that Aboriginal communities in general lacked important information about colorectal cancer, including its causes, symptoms and recommended prevention strategies.

Purpose

  • Increase understanding within Aboriginal communities about the importance of cancer prevention and colorectal cancer screening
  • Raise awareness and knowledge about colorectal cancer
  • Increase participation in screening among Ontario’s Aboriginal population

Colorectal cancer symptom wheel
An interactive tool that highlights the signs and symptoms of colorectal cancer using illustrations of Aboriginal people.
Colorectal cancer educational playing cards
Actual playing cards that promote learning while engaging in a fun activity. The cards use illustrations of Aboriginal people to highlight ways to prevent and manage cancer. Available in English and Ojicree.
Poster – Seven Grandfather Teachings
An 11” x 17” poster based on the Seven Grandfather Teachings with advice for healthy living and colorectal cancer prevention related to each teaching. Available in English and Ojicree.
