Cancer Care Ontario and the Ontario Ministry of Health are pleased to support a number of post-graduate positions in clinical physics, aimed at providing a solid foundation in specialized medical physics applied to the field of radiation oncology.

Our aim is to train medical physicists to perform duties competently, professionally and safely in a clinical environment, and to help fulfill the future physics staffing needs of cancer centres in Ontario.

Qualifications and Basis of Award

Open to post-graduates (MSc/PhD) in physics (preferably PhD, medical physics or medical biophysics) or a closely-related discipline in a recognized university program, these residencies are awarded on the basis of academic achievement and the potential for a professional career as a clinical physicist.

Duration and Stipend

Approximately two years, with a stipend at the level of junior clinical physicist (minimum stipend is $52,000 per annum).

Location

Studentships are offered at Regional Cancer Centres located in Hamilton, Kingston, Oshawa, Kitchener, London, Mississauga, Ottawa, Sudbury, Thunder Bay, Toronto and Windsor and at the Ontario Cancer Institute/Princess Margaret Hospital-University Health Network in Toronto. Availability of these positions at specific locations will vary from year to year, and is subject to budget approvals by Cancer Care Ontario and the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care.

Evaluation

At the conclusion of the two-year training, each resident is required to submit a report on their research project (20 %) to the local Program Director, present the project findings, and defend acquired clinical skills in an examination before a Panel of certified medical physicists. The examinations are normally held twice per year. Successful candidates become eligible (not guaranteed) for employment in Ontario Cancer Centres. The Ontario training program is well recognized and serves as an excellent preparation towards subsequent hospital certification by the Canadian College of Medical Physicists (CCPM).

Application Deadline

Applicants may submit a letter of interest and an up-to-date resume (CV) at any time. The letter should highlight their academic background, relevant work experience, interests, and future career goals.

For more information, please contact the provincial or regional program director.

Application Information for Review Examinations for Medical Physics

The examinations are held three times per year according to the following schedule:

Review A Examination Date*  Deadline for Submissions
Second half of May  April 15
First half of September  August 1
 First half of December
  November 1

*Exact dates for the examinations are determined based on the examiner, candidate and sponsor availability.

Examination sessions are normally held at one of the local regional cancer programs. Additional information can be obtained from the local Regional Program Directors or from the Chair of the Physics Credentialing Committee.

The examinations will be conducted in accordance with the Medical Physics Career Structure document. Applicants should submit documents, as described in the Career Structure, to the Chair of the Medical Physics Professional Advisory Committee (PPAC). The documents should include:

Review A:
    • a letter of support from the Head of Medical Physics of the sponsoring regional cancer program,
    • a current curriculum vitae, an abstract of a 15-minute oral presentation on a clinical research topic to be made by the applicant during the review,
    • copies of all the candidate’s periodic residency work reports.

    Review B:
    • letters of support and an evaluation of the candidate’s performance with reference to the requirements for a senior physicist from the Head of Medical Physics and a Radiation Oncologist of the sponsoring regional cancer program,
    • a current curriculum vitae,
    • a summary of experience which describes in brief detail (2-4 pages) the experience, qualifications and achievements consistent with the expectations for appointment as a senior physicist as identified in the job description for a senior medical physicist and in the assessment criteria for appointment to senior physicist.

The Medical Physics Credentialing Committee will do a preliminary review of submissions to assess completeness of applications. Candidates with incomplete applications will NOT be eligible for further review or examination. Although a successful application for Review B will not usually require an oral presentation or further examination, these may be required in some circumstances, as determined by the Physics Credentialing Committee.

The candidates to undertake an examination will be provided with further details of date and location once all applications for a particular session have been received and assessed. The applications for Review B candidates will undergo final assessment during, or soon after, the Rev A session.
