Named in honour of the late Dr. Ivan H. Smith (an internationally-known radiation oncologist, Professor of Radiation Oncology at The University of Western Ontario and Director of The Ontario Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation’s London Centre), the Ivan Smith Studentships serve to familiarize medical students in undergraduate education with the work of regional cancer centres, the Princess Margaret Hospital, the Hospital for Sick Children, the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, the Children’s Hospital of Western Ontario, Hotel Dieu Hospital and McMaster University Medical Centre. Ivan Smith studentships may be held in either Adult Oncology or Paediatric Oncology, but not both.

These summer elective Studentships are open to any student in an Ontario Faculty of Medicine, and may be held after the student has completed his or her second medical year and before graduation. The major factor in the awarding of Studentships is academic achievement.

  • The Studentship is 4 weeks in duration and is to be taken outside the student's academic year, for which a stipend will be paid. For 2010, the weekly stipend will be $350.

Successful applicants will be placed either in Adult Oncology in one of the regional cancer centres located in Hamilton, Kingston, London, Ottawa, Sudbury, Thunder Bay, Windsor, Odette Cancer Centre, or the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto; or in Paediatric Oncology at the Hospital for Sick Children (Toronto), Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (Ottawa), Children's Hospital of Western Ontario (London), McMaster University Medical Centre (Hamilton) or Hotel Dieu Hospital (Kingston).

Applications are to be submitted to the Program Director at the cancer centre where the student attends university, to the address listed below by Monday, February 8, 2010. The Program Directors are asked to complete the necessary interviews and forward their memorandum ranking of the students and all submitted application documents to the Provincial Lead, Clinical Education Awards at CCO in Toronto by March 1, 2010, so that the recipients of the Studentships can be notified by March 22, 2010.

Application Process:

  1. Applicants to request from the Dean’s office a letter of recommendation and a transcript of marks for the first, and any subsequent, academic year(s).

  2. Medical students must call and request an interview with the Program Director at the Cancer Centre in the city where the student attends university (names, addresses and telephone numbers are listed below); then send or take the necessary papers - application, curriculum vitae, letter of recommendation and transcript(s) as requested for interview.

Please be advised a limited number of studentships are available. Completing the application and interview process does not guarantee a studentship. Letters to each applicant of status will be sent out by March 22, 2010.

Due to the limited number of studentships available; Students may not be offered their first choice placement. We have to place students evenly within each Regional Cancer Program whenever possible.

Within 30 days of the completion of the Studentships, each student is required to send a report describing his or her experiences to Esther Green, Provincial Lead, Educational Awards at Cancer Care Ontario, 620 University Avenue, Toronto, Ontario M5G 2L7.
