One of Cancer Care Ontario’s functions is to equip health professionals, organizations, and policy makers with the most up-to-date cancer knowledge and tools to prevent cancer and deliver unsurpassed patient care.
We collect and analyze a vast amount of information and data about cancer to produce new knowledge about cancer prevention and treatment, which becomes available in the form of guidelines, standards, and planning.
This new knowledge is transferred to health professionals and organizations in the cancer care system where it is used to improve patient care and in some cases change the delivery and organization of cancer services to improve health outcomes and performance.
Cancer Care Ontario uses a number of strategies to continually improve the performance of cancer services. This includes regularly reviewing the performance of each regional cancer centre and the cancer services in the Regional Cancer Program in their LHIN; working with Regional Vice Presidents at each regional cancer centre, and with cancer care providers in the Regional Cancer Programs, to address problems and improve; and making some funding conditional upon delivering results, including quality improvements and reporting results to cancer care providers and to the public.
