Cancer Care Ontario’s Program in Evidence-Based Care’s (PEBC)  is an internationally recognized guideline development program that works to improve the quality of cancer care by helping clinicians and policy makers to apply the best scientific evidence in practice and policy decisions.

The PEBC produces evidence-based guidance documents in partnership with clinical experts in all major cancer disease sites and across all clinical programs and modalities. PEBC guidelines cover the entire continuum of care, spanning prevention, screening, diagnostic assessment, treatment, palliative care and survivorship. Over 200 clinicians and other experts are involved annually in our multidisciplinary panels, who review evidence and draft recommendations for these guidelines, and over 1,000 additional reviewers are available to participate through the process of external review.  For more information about the PEBC and our guideline development process, please use the link below to view the PEBC Handbook.

The PEBC’s evidence-based guidelines and standards are published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, as well as on CCO’s web site. In recent years, Cancer Care Ontario has built upon the PEBC’s well-established expertise in producing clinical practice guidelines for the care of individual patients and has developed organizational guidance documents that set expectations for organizations delivering cancer services in terms of personnel, expertise, facilities and services.  The PEBC is also actively engaged in health services research on the best ways to implement guidelines and apply evidence in clinical practice.
The PEBC is linked academically to the Department of Oncology and  the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, in the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University, an internationally recognized leader in evidence-based medicine and health care.
