Cancer Genetics Registries

Cancer genetics registries provide a research infrastructure for studying genetic and non-genetic (e.g. environmental) factors that contribute to breast, ovarian and colorectal cancer. Cancer Care Ontario houses and supports the Ontario Familial Breast and Colorectal Cancer Registries, and the network that oversees research using the data and resources from those registries.

The Ontario Cancer Genetics Network

The Ontario Cancer Genetics Network, established in 1994, is a province-wide, multidisciplinary research network that conducts research on familial and inherited cancer by collecting biological samples and detailed personal and family histories. The data and samples are collected through the Ontario familial breast and colon cancer registries.

The network is involved in over 50 research studies, and works to translate research findings into clinical practice.

The network involves the Regional Cancer Programs, provincial familial cancer clinics and over 100 clinicians and researchers.

The Ontario Familial Breast and Colorectal Cancer Registries

The Ontario Familial Breast and Colorectal Cancer Registries participate in Cancer Family Registries (CFR), an international assembly made up of 10 participating sites from Australia, the United States and Canada.

The Ontario Familial Breast Cancer Registry (OFBCR)

The OFBCR collects personal and family health information, and biological specimens. Members are Ontario residents who have a personal or family history of breast cancer suggestive of genetic predisposition and who are willing to participate in research studies. Registry data is used in combination with data from the other five contributing sites for research on familial breast and ovarian cancer.

The OFBCR provides an infrastructure for both present and future research on genetic forms of breast and ovarian cancer and the new preventive and therapeutic strategies to combat it.

Since 1996, over 10,000 Ontario residents have contributed to the OFBCR.

Many research papers have been published from this resource. For more information, go to the Cancer Family Registries Web site.

If you are a member of the OFBCR and have questions regarding your participation, call us at 1-800-832-5949.

  • Philadelphia Familial Breast Cancer Registry (Pennsylvania, USA)
  • Utah Cooperative Breast Cancer Registry (Utah, USA)

The Ontario Familial Colorectal Cancer Registry (OFCCR)

The OFCCR collects personal and family health information from Ontario residents who have a family history of colorectal cancer and stores that information to be used in research studies. The registry provides an infrastructure for future research on genetic forms of colorectal cancer and the new preventive and therapeutic strategies to combat it.

Registry data is combined with that from the five other international colon sites to be used in both Ontario-specific and large international research projects.

The registry has served as a valuable resource for research in the area of familial colorectal cancer and has already fostered many research papers. For more information, go to the Cancer Family Registries Web site.

Since 1997, the OFCCR has collected information on over 1,800 participants with colorectal cancer, 2,500 of their relatives, and almost 1,600 individuals from the general population.
