Recommendations for new and replacement radiation equipment and related facilities

Mobile Treatment Units

  • One unit was relocated from Ottawa to Peterborough – title transfer of the unit to Peterborough and clinical treatment – July 2013
  • The unit at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie is not clinical at this time – awaiting decision on relocation

Completed Projects

Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre

  • Current sites: The Ottawa Hospital - General Campus and Queensway Carlton Hospital
  • This project resulted in the closing of the Civic Campus site and the construction of a new site at the Queensway Carleton Hospital.
  • The General Campus redevelopment will be a combination of renovation and new construction.
  • The Maurice Grimes Lodge will remain on the Civic Campus and continue to meet the needs of patients at both sites who reside more than 40km from Ottawa.
  • Project Completed: General Campus – Spring 2010; Queensway Carlton – Spring 2010
  • Catchment area - Ottawa Carlton, Prescott and Russell, Renfrew, Stormont Dundas Glengarry and parts of Lanark and Leeds and Grenville

Regional Cancer Centre at Southlake

  • Location - Newmarket
  • The catchment area for this centre includes: Aurora, Newmarket, Markham, East Gwillimbury and Georgian in northern York Region
  • Completed March 2010
  • The Regional Cancer Centre at Southlake will provide multi-disciplinary services including Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology and Supportive Care services.
  • The Centre has been designed to accommodate 6 radiation treatment rooms, a simulator suite to house a planning CT scanner and associated support spaces. Chemotherapy services will be delivered in a 20treatment space department with an adjacent chemotherapy pharmacy. Supportive Care services will be provided throughout the Centre in counselling rooms.

Algoma Regional Cancer Centre - Sault Area Hospital

  • Location - Sault Ste. Marie 
  • Multidisciplinary cancer care facility, with one radiation treatment machine in operation upon opening
  • Catchment area - Algoma District, a geographic area of 57,000 sq. km, with a population of 127,000, representing 20% of the population of Northeastern Ontario
  • Major urban centre - Sault Ste. Marie, with approximately two thirds of the population of Algoma
  • Sault Ste. Marie is 300 km from the North East Ontario Cancer Centre
  • Project completed – Spring 2011

Simcoe-Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre - Royal Victoria Hospital

  • Location - Barrie
  • Expected to serve the regional catchment areas of Barrie, Innisfill, Essa, Springwater and beyond.
  • Construction began in 2008 with completion Spring 2012
  • The centre will provide an array of multidisciplinary services including a radiation program utilizing 4 linear accelerators and a simulator suite as well as a Medical Oncology Program with 34 treatment spaces for chemotherapy delivery.

Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario - Kingston General Hospital

  • Location - Kingston
  • This project encompasses the expansion of the existing Centre to provide additional radiation, systemic and surgical oncology treatment space and the related support services.
  • Construction began in 2009 – Completed 2012
  • Catchment area - Lanark, Leeds and Grenville, Frontenac, Peterborough, Lennox and Addington, Hastings and Prince Edward

Niagara Regional Cancer Centre - Niagara Health System

  • Location - St. Catharine’s
  • Multidisciplinary cancer-care facility, with the capability of operating three radiation treatment machines.
  • Catchment area - Niagara Region; a small number of patients may come from Dunnville area in Haldimand-Norfolk County
  • Two peripheral clinics, in Welland and Niagara Falls are a part of Niagara Cancer Centre
  • The ambulatory component of the Niagara Cancer Centre was constructed as part of the overall Niagara Health System new hospital project
  • Construction began in 2009
  • Project completed - March 2013
