At some point in their cancer treatment journey patients may be given the opportunity to participate in clinical trials involving systemic therapy drugs. Clinical trials can help to improve patient outcomes and we, along with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, are strongly supportive of these clinical investigations.
As of December 12th, 2016 we launched version 3.0 of the Clinical Trials Policy: “Public funding of cancer drugs and their administration within the context of clinical trials”, along with frequently asked questions, a post-consultation report and a provider fact sheet that may be helpful for clinicians who are discussing clinical trial options with their patients.
How to submit a new request
The Systemic Treatment Clinical Trials Request Intake Form was revised on Feb 3, 2017.
The significant changes to the form include:
Section B: Clinical Trial Information
Revised question on Standard of Care treatments to assist with assessing trials with multiple tumour types.
Section D: Provincial Applicant’s Signature
Request for provincial applicant’s signature as confirmation that they have reviewed and approved the information submitted.
Prior to submitting a new request, please search the clinical trials assessment table to find out if your clinical trial is listed as pending or complete. In such cases, there is no need to submit a new request. The status of pending requests will be updated periodically.
To submit a new request, the applicant, a practicing clinician affiliated with an Ontario hospital or cancer centre who is involved in the clinical trial recruiting at their site, must complete the Systemic Treatment Clinical Trials Request Intake Form and submit to email@example.com.
The completed request intake form is used to assess whether the cancer drugs used in the clinical trial or subsequent to the clinical trial can be publicly reimbursed, as well as the funding for the drug preparation, administration and delivery, and related clinical care for patients.
All feedback and questions concerning the policy, funding principles, or individual assessments can be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org.
